Nick Perry, Jerel Worthy, M.D. Jennings, D.J. Smith, Casey Hayward are all names that aren’t very familiar to Packers fans….YET.
Theses defensive players will, in my opinion, play key roles in the success, or lack there of, of the Green Bay Packers defense this season.
After watching this group get after it for the last couple of days, they not only are impressive but they are now being relied upon. With Hargrove and Neal out with suspensions, Perry and Worthy get the call and Worthy especially looks like he’s ready to take on the task. “I’m anxious”, Worthy told me, “I can’t wait to contribute. I have to work on my technique but I feel like I’m progressing and can play at this level I’m confident of that”.
Meanwhile, the defensive secondary of the Packers, which needs to feed off of the front 3 and OLB’s, has seen some shuffling. Sam Shields has been less than average which has opened the door for guys like Hayward and Jennings to get more looks. With Charles Woodson moving around in the Nickle and Dime packages, the open spots in the defensive secondary are up for grabs. Hayward, the rookie CB out of Vanderbilt, has been very impressive along with M.D. Jennings, the 2nd year safety.
All in all, my impression of camp thus far is that Mike McCarthy is looking for attention to detail, get your work done, get after it hard when the pads are on and get off the field and into film study. To say this has been an efficient camp would be a proper adjective.
