After the Green Bay, Seattle Monday night debacle, Packers nation was up in arms. So much so that fans flooded the NFL headquarters with over 70,000 voicemails. But they didn’t stop there. Somehow, someway fans discovered the phone number of Wayne Elliott, the replacement official who ultimately gave the Seahawks the win over the Packers. Elliott told “Inside The NFL” that he was getting hate voicemails before he even left Century Link Field that night.
One call came to Elliott’s home later that week that he couldn’t help but answer. It was Mike McCarthy. “He called me at my house last week because he had heard I was having a rough week with all the calls and everything,” Elliott recalled for Inside The NFL. “Wanted (me) to know that he thought what I did…..controversial and maybe he didn’t agree with it…. (but he thought) I handled it with class.”
When asked about the phone call, McCarthy simply stated that it was a conversation that was meant to be private and didn’t really want to talk about it.
Years ago there was an ad campaign for those who wanted to be “like Mike”. I think we could resurrect that marketing sentiment today….obviously a new face has emerged.
Nice move Coach!
